At 103, Mike Fremont from Ohio, USA, is not just alive, he’s full of energy and living life to the fullest. While most people his age need support for even basic tasks, Mike still climbs stairs daily, paddles canoes, and even does pull-ups. His journey to health and long life began more than 30 years ago, when he was told he had only three months to live.
A shocking cancer diagnosis at 69
When Mike was 69, doctors found he had colon cancer. They said surgery was urgent, and without it, he had just three months to live. But Mike made a bold decision. He refused surgery and turned to food for healing.
“I said no. I was going on a diet,” he said in an interview.
Inspired by The Cancer Prevention Diet by Michio Kushi, Mike switched to a strict plant-based macrobiotic diet. He ate only natural, plant-based foods and stuck to this routine for more than two years.
When the tumour eventually had to be removed, doctors were surprised. They found no signs of cancer spread in his body. “The surgeon checked 35 places for cancer and found nothing. My diet saved me,” Mike shared.
What Mike eats every day
Since 1994, Mike has been following the same clean, plant-based diet. He eats mostly brown rice, steamed vegetables like kale, carrots, and cabbage, seaweed, and half a can of beans every day.
Beans are rich in fibre, protein, and natural compounds that may help protect against cancer. Mike avoids sugar, meat, dairy, packaged and fried foods. He does not use oil and prefers meals that are boiled, steamed, or fermented.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, plant-based diets like Mike’s can help boost the immune system and lower the risk of serious diseases like cancer.
Mike’s exercise and workout plan
Mike’s physical activity is just as impressive as his diet. Until he was 98, he ran 10 miles three times a week. Today, he climbs nearly 50 stairs a day, does pull-ups, and paddles a canoe with ease.
“For me, movement isn’t exercise—it’s just part of living,” he said in a YouTube interview.
Health experts say staying active helps slow down ageing and keeps the mind and body strong.
The importance of sleep
Mike also believes that good sleep is a big part of staying healthy. He sleeps 8 to 9 hours every night without using an alarm and avoids screens before bedtime.
Research shows that quality sleep helps repair the body, reduce inflammation, and support brain function. Mike’s regular sleep habits may be a major reason for his long life.
Mike chose a life close to nature
Mike does not rely much on medicines. Instead, he focuses on natural living. He drinks filtered water, grows his own food, avoids chemical-based products, and spends time outdoors.
